Getting engaged is exciting, but once the celebrations settle down, the reality hits: Where on earth do we start?

With so much inspiration online, it's easy to feel like you need to make hundreds of decisions straight away. The truth is, you don't.

The best weddings aren't the ones with the biggest budgets or the latest trends. They're the ones that feel like the couple getting married.

Here's how we'd recommend getting started.

1. Decide What Matters Most to You When Planning

Before you look at venues, flowers or dresses, sit down together and answer one simple question:

What are the three things we want our guests to remember?

Everyone's list will be different.

It might be:

• Incredible food

• A packed dance floor with an amazing band

• A relaxed countryside atmosphere

• Beautiful photography

• Great drinks

• Spending quality time with family and friends

Whatever your three priorities are, that's where your budget should work hardest.

For example, if live music is your thing, it probably makes sense to invest more in an incredible band than elaborate centrepieces. If you're food lovers, perhaps the catering becomes the star of the day.

Knowing your priorities makes every decision afterwards much easier.

2. Set a Realistic Budget (Before You Start Booking)

We know—it isn't the most exciting part of wedding planning.

But having a clear budget from the beginning will save you so much stress later on.

Work out:

• Your overall budget

• Whether anyone else is contributing

• A comfortable amount you'd like to spend, rather than the absolute maximum

Remember to leave a little contingency too. There are always a few unexpected costs along the way.

Once you know your budget, you can focus on venues and suppliers that genuinely fit, rather than falling in love with options that stretch things too far.

3. Choose Your Venue Early

Your venue sets the tone for almost everything else and influences:

• The overall atmosphere

When you're viewing venues, don't just picture how they look on Instagram.

Think about how the day will actually feel.

Can guests move around comfortably?

Are there indoor and outdoor spaces?

Does it suit the kind of celebration you want?

4. Think About Your Guest List

You don't need everyone's address straight away; having an idea of numbers is helpful.

There's a big difference between planning for 60 guests and 130.

Your guest count will influence almost every part of your wedding, including:

• Budget overall

Even an approximate number is enough to help guide your decisions.

5. Don't Feel You Need to Have Every Detail Planned

Pinterest can make it feel as though everyone has chosen napkin colours before they've even booked a venue.

In reality?

Most couples don't.

The big decisions come first:

Everything else naturally starts to fall into place afterwards.

Try not to compare your planning journey with anyone else's.

Remember…

Your wedding doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Some couples want a formal sit-down meal.

Others want wood-fired pizza, lawn games and dancing until midnight.

Some spend more on flowers.

Others invest in live music.

There's no right or wrong—only what feels right for you.

When you focus on what matters most, set a realistic budget and choose a venue that supports your vision, planning becomes much less overwhelming and much more enjoyable.
